Manassas: A Novel of the War centers on the moral dimension of the Civil War as it traces a young Mississippi boy's conversion from pro-slavery Southerner to abolitionist Union soldier. The story follows Allan Montague, who grows up on a Mississippi plantation and initially considers slavery natural, but after moving to Boston and meeting historical figures such as Levi Coffin and Frederick Douglass, undergoes a transformation that leads him back to the South to free slaves and ultimately to the Battle of Manassas.
