In the summer of 1921, a disenchanted journalist named Mr. Barnstaple leaves the city for a drive in the country. During his trip, he and other motorists are transported 3,000 years into the future. They arrive in a utopian society free of crime, poverty, war, disease, and bigotry. Citizens live without government or religion, pursuing creative and meaningful lives. However, Barnstaple's companions attempt to change the utopia to match their own twentieth-century world. H. G. Wells' novel, written after World War I, explores the failings of human nature while offering hope for a better future.
