About “Mensagem”

Message is a poetry collection by Fernando Pessoa, the only book in Portuguese that Pessoa published during his lifetime. It is a small epic in which the lyrical "I" is in fact a "we," the Portuguese nation, with poems summarizing the nation's past history and the promise of its future history. At the center of the poem, as at the center of the Portuguese nation and soul, appears the myth of King Sebastian, a unifying force for all hopes.
