Captain Alastair Maclean travels through England during the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie's preparations to reclaim his throne, searching for a Jacobite traitor. His investigation leads him to suspect Sir John Norreys, though his judgment may be clouded by his affection for Sir John's bride, and he seeks help from Midwinter, the mysterious leader of the brotherhood of "the Naked Men," while evading Hanoverian pursuers and facing threats from a gypsy.
