Carl Stanton, an invalid suffering from rheumatism, receives a circular from his fiancée that she considers amusing and apropos of his sentimental passion for letters. In response, he writes a series of letters to the circular, which leads to a flurry of correspondence that distracts him from his boredom and pain but also brings unexpected consequences.
