"Mr. Prokharchin" is a short story written by Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1846 and first published in the Annals of the Fatherland. The story is based on a true event and follows the life of Mr. Prokharchin, a man who lives in extreme poverty, eating simple meals and sleeping on a mattress on the floor. His landlady and other tenants pity him. Upon his death, they discover he was actually wealthy and had chosen to live frugally. A large amount of money is found hidden in his mattress.
