About “Netochka Nezvanova”

Netochka Nezvanova is Fyodor Dostoevsky's first but unfinished novel. It translates to "nameless nobody." The first completed section was published at the end of 1849. The story follows a young girl living in extreme poverty in Saint Petersburg. She becomes an orphan and is adopted by a wealthy family. There, she meets her stepsister, Katya, and becomes deeply infatuated with her. The two grow close, but Katya leaves for Moscow with her parents. For the next eight years, Netochka lives with Katya's older sister, who becomes her new mother figure. The story ends before the two girls reunite.
