About “Parerga and Paralipomena”

Parerga and Paralipomena is a collection of philosophical reflections by Arthur Schopenhauer, published in 1851. It was not intended as a summary or introduction to his philosophy, but as additional readings for those already familiar with his work. However, the author believed it could also be understood and appreciated by others. The book is divided into two volumes. The first, called the parerga, contains six extended essays meant to supplement his main ideas. The second, the paralipomena, includes shorter pieces organized under thirty-one topics, covering subjects that had not been previously addressed but were seen as complementary to the parerga.
