About “Plain tales from the hills”

Originally written for the Lahore Civil and Military Gazette, these stories by Rudyard Kipling were intended for a provincial readership familiar with colonial life. For the English edition, Kipling revised the tales to vividly recreate the sights and smells of India. Rather than celebrating Empire, the stories describe barriers between races, classes, and sexes, and depict innocence crushed rather than transformed into experience.
