About “Shahnameh”
The Shahnameh, also known as Shahnama, is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between approximately 977 and 1010 CE. It is the national epic of Greater Iran and consists of about 50,000 couplets. The poem covers the mythical and historical past of Iran, beginning with the creation of the world and ending with the Muslim conquest in the seventh century. The Shahnameh is one of the longest epic poems in the world and the longest written by a single author. Ferdowsi spent 33 years completing the work. The epic is celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and other regions influenced by Persian culture, including Armenia, Dagestan, Georgia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
