About “South of the Border, West of the Sun”

Hajime, an atypical only child from a middle-class suburb, and Shimamoto, also an only child, were childhood friends who shared a deep connection. They spent afternoons listening to music, holding hands, and discussing their future. However, like many adolescents, they drifted apart. Years later, Hajime, now a successful nightclub owner and a husband and father, is reunited with Shimamoto. This encounter draws him into the complexities of her life and the secrets she keeps. Captivated by her, Hajime is determined to reclaim a love he thought was lost, risking everything to experience a life he once dreamed of but never had the chance to live. The story is part of a 1992 novel by Haruki Murakami.
