Star Island by Carl Hiaasen follows Ann DeLusia, a woman who serves as a stand-in for the pop star Cherry Pye, when Cherry is too impaired to appear in public. Ann is kidnapped from a South Beach hotel by the paparazzo Bang Abbott, prompting Cherry's handlers to attempt her rescue while concealing Ann's existence, but complications arise when Ann encounters the former governor of Florida, Skink, who is coming to Miami to find her.
