About “Tannishō”
The Tannishō, also known as the Lamentations of Divergences, is a short Buddhist text from the late 13th century. It was written by Yuien, a disciple of Shinran, the founder of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism. The text records dialogues between Yuien and Shinran that Yuien remembered from when his master was alive. Yuien wrote the Tannishō in response to growing doctrinal differences within the tradition after Shinran's death.
