About “Thank you for smoking”
Nick Naylor is the chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies in Christopher Buckley's satirical novel. He defends smoking in the 1990s, a time when anti-smoking activists often compare him to Nazis. Nick's job is both a challenge and a necessity, as he works to support his family, including his son's education at a private school. His new boss, BR, questions his value, leading Nick to seek support from colleagues in the firearms and alcohol industries, who call themselves the Merchants of Death. Together, they discuss the difficulties of their roles. To prove his worth, Nick launches a PR campaign, appearing on national television shows. However, his growing fame makes him a target for those determined to expose the dangers of smoking. Buckley's novel uses dark humor to critique societal and political issues.
