About “The Barber of Seville”
The Barber of Seville or the Useless Precaution is a French play written by Pierre Beaumarchais, with original music by Antoine-Laurent Baudron. Initially created as an opéra comique, it was rejected in 1772 by the Comédie-Italienne. The play was written in 1773 but could not be performed until February 23, 1775, due to legal and political issues involving the author. It premiered at the Comédie-Française in the Tuileries. The play is the first in a trilogy that includes The Marriage of Figaro and The Guilty Mother. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
