About “The Bookshop”

In 1959, Florence Green, a kindhearted widow with a small inheritance, opens the only bookshop in the seaside town of Hardborough. She hopes to succeed despite the impracticality of her venture, but her efforts draw the hostility of local shopkeepers. She also faces opposition from Mrs. Gamart, the town's influential arts figure. Her shop suffers from leaks and damp, and it is rumored to be haunted. As she struggles to keep the business running, she begins to realize that the town may not truly want a bookshop. The novel, published in 1978 by Penelope Fitzgerald, explores themes of perseverance and the challenges of bringing culture to a reluctant community.
