About “The Chameleon”

"The Chameleon" is a short story by Anton Chekhov first published in 1884 in the magazine Oskolki, numbered 36 and dated 8 September. It was later included in Chekhov's 1886 collection Motley Stories, published in Saint Petersburg. The story remained unchanged in subsequent editions of the collection, from 1891 to 1899. It was also part of Volume 2 of Chekhov's Collected Works. The story was originally subtitled "A Little Scene" and was signed by Chekhov as "A. Chekhonte."
