Tab Holland, a newspaper reporter and friend of a local police investigator, becomes involved in the investigation of the murder of his roommate’s uncle, Jesse Transmere, a wealthy miser found dead in a cellar vault locked from the inside. The case draws in Ursula Ardfern, a famous actress and recent acquaintance of Tab’s, who had previously received financial support from the victim, while Tab’s own interest deepens after both his apartment and the murder scene are ransacked.
