About “The Confusions of Young Törless”

The Confusions of Young Törless is the first novel by Austrian writer Robert Musil, published in 1906. It is presented as a Bildungsroman, following a young man's struggle to find moral values in society. The story is based on Musil's experiences at a boarding school in Hranice, now in the Czech Republic, though he later denied the novel was autobiographical. The novel caused a scandal due to its explicit sexual content. Later interpretations have identified prefigurings of Fascism in the text, particularly in the characters of Beineberg and Reiting, who appear orderly but abuse another student in secret.
