The Death of a Government Clerk is a short story by Anton Chekhov, published originally in Oskolki magazine's 2 July issue No. 27, subtitled "The Incident" and signed A. Chekhonte. Editor Nikolai Leykin praised it in a 29 June letter. It was included in Chekhov's 1886 collection Motley Stories, published in Saint Petersburg, and appeared unchanged in its 2nd through 14th editions (1891-1899).
