About “The dying animal”
David Kepesh is a white-haired, over-sixty TV culture critic and professor at a New York college. He meets Consuela Castillo, a twenty-four-year-old student from a wealthy Cuban exile family. Since the 1960s, Kepesh has lived an "emancipated manhood," avoiding family and committed relationships. He has maintained a life of sexual freedom and artistic focus. However, Consuela's beauty and grace disrupt his carefully ordered existence. Her presence leads him into intense sexual desire and possessive jealousy. Over eight years, their relationship transforms from an erotic adventure into a painful story of loss.
