David Kepesh is a white-haired, over-sixty TV culture critic and professor at a New York college. He meets Consuela Castillo, a twenty-four-year-old student from a wealthy Cuban exile family. Since the 1960s, Kepesh has lived an "emancipated manhood," avoiding family and committed relationships. He has maintained a life of sexual freedom and artistic focus. However, Consuela's beauty and grace disrupt his carefully ordered existence. Her presence leads him into intense sexual desire and possessive jealousy.
