The Hills Beyond is a collection of sketches, stories, and novellas that draws its title from Thomas Wolfe's unfinished novel. The collection includes "Chickamauga," a Civil War tale based on material from Wolfe's great-uncle, "The Lost Boy," which portrays the death of young Grover Gant, and "The Return of the Prodigal," which depicts Eugene Gant's imagined and then actual return to Altamont as a famous author.
