About “The Horror at Red Hook”

The Horror at Red Hook is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft, written in August 1925. It serves as a transitional work between his earlier stories and the Cthulhu Mythos. The story features a sinister cult that worships a conventional devil, differing from the cosmic threats in his later works. At the time, Lovecraft lived in poverty and aimed to expand his audience by targeting pulp magazines. He created an Irish police detective as the protagonist, hoping to sell the story to a detective magazine. This effort failed, and the story was published in Weird Tales in January 1927.
