The Ice Master recounts the 1913–1914 Arctic expedition of the H.M.C.S. Karluk, led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, which aimed to explore the Arctic and find evidence of a hidden continent beneath the polar ice cap. After the ship became trapped in ice and was abandoned by its leader, the crew, including Captain Robert Bartlett, an Inuit woman and her children, twenty-nine dogs, and a cat, endured months of survival on the drifting ice, facing starvation, disease, and extreme cold before twelve were rescued nine months later.
