The Duke of Warminster is furious after Jabina lies her way into his carriage, forcing him to travel across Scotland with her. After the carriage overturns and injures him, Jabina again lies, telling the Scottish couple who shelter them that she and the Duke are married. Their hostess reveals an old Scottish law under which a declaration of marriage before witnesses is legally binding, leaving the Duke wondering if he is now actually wed.
