About “The Island of the Day Before”

In 1643, a young Piedmontese man named Roberto de la Grive arrives as a shipwreck on a deserted ship in the Southern Seas. The ship is filled with strange animals and machines, and before it lies an unattainable dream island. Roberto writes letters to the "Lady," revealing his past through duels, sieges, and love affairs. The story traces his slow and painful initiation into the world of new science, state politics, and espionage under Mazarino and Richelieu, set against the backdrop of the Thirty Years' War. The novel explores a universe where the Earth is no longer the center of everything. In this "Sea of Innocence," nothing is truly innocent, and Roberto understands this from the start, as he has come to these Antipodes to solve a mystery that the new powers of the time are competing to uncover: the secret of the Fixed Point. This 1994 novel by Umberto Eco blends history, mystery, and philosophical inquiry.
