About “The Judge and His Hangman”

The Judge and His Hangman is a 1950 crime novel by Swiss author Friedrich Dürrenmatt. It was first published in English in 1954, translated by Cyrus Brooks. A second translation by Therese Pol followed, and a new version by Joel Agee was released in 2006. This translation was paired with the novel's sequel, Suspicion, as part of The Inspector Bärlach Mysteries, with a foreword by Sven Birkerts. Alongside The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel, these works are regarded as classics of crime fiction, blending philosophical themes with the detective genre.
