About “The Landlady”

The Landlady is a novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky, written and published in 1847. Set in Saint Petersburg, it follows Vasily Mikhailovich Ordynov, a young man consumed by an obsessive love for Katerina, the wife of a man he views as a sinister fortune-teller. The story draws on Russian folklore and may include personal elements from Dostoevsky’s life. Upon its release, the novella received mixed reviews, but it is now considered distinct within Dostoevsky’s body of work. The first part appeared in October 1847 in Notes of the Fatherland, with the second part published in November of the same year. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
