About “The Museum of Innocence”

The Museum of Innocence is a novel by Orhan Pamuk, his first since winning the Nobel Prize. Set in 1975 Istanbul, it follows Kemal, a member of one of the city's wealthiest families, who is engaged to Sibel, the daughter of another prominent family. He meets Fusun, a shopgirl and distant relative, and the two begin a forbidden relationship. This leads Kemal to reject the Westernized Istanbul bourgeois world he once loved, including its parties, clubs, and social rituals. He breaks off his engagement to Sibel but is too late to change his path. For eight years, he visits the poorer parts of the city where Fusun lives, experiencing a different side of Istanbul. His obsession with Fusun leads him to collect objects that reflect his emotional journey. The novel explores themes of love, longing, and collecting. It also reflects on Istanbul's cultural duality and is considered Pamuk's greatest achievement.
