About “The Mutiny of the Elsinore”

The Mutiny of the Elsinore is a 1914 novel by Jack London. After the captain's death, the crew splits between two senior mates, leading to conflict. The narrator becomes a strong character, similar to The Sea-Wolf. The novel reflects some of London's political views, which were part of his broader perspective. It is partly based on his 1912 voyage around Cape Horn on the Dirigo. A character named De Casseres, who holds nihilistic beliefs similar to those of French philosopher Jules de Gaultier, is modeled after London's friend and journalist Benjamin De Casseres.
