Ponyboy divides people into two groups: greasers and socs. Soc stands for "social," and they have money, power, and an attitude. Greasers live on the outside and must always watch out for themselves. Ponyboy is a greaser and takes pride in it, even fighting against socs for his friends. But after his friend Johnny kills a soc, Ponyboy's world falls apart. The murder shakes him deeply and teaches him that pain is the same for everyone, no matter if they're a greaser or a soc.
