About “The Peasant Marey”
"The Peasant Marey" is a short story written by Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1876. It is considered the best-known autobiographical account from Dostoevsky's Writer's Diary. The story is also frequently anthologized as a work of fiction. It uses a double structure, presented as both a short story told by the fictional character Goryanchikov from The House of the Dead and as Dostoevsky's own reminiscences. This structure allowed the author to express personal reflections while avoiding censorship. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
