About “The Price of Salt”
The Price of Salt is a lesbian love story written by Patricia Highsmith under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. The novel was notable for its happy ending, which was unusual for homosexual fiction at the time. Highsmith said the story was inspired by a woman she saw in a shop and followed. The book was popular with lesbians in the 1950s because it featured unconventional characters and a positive ending. It was initially published but later fell out of print. It was re-issued and is now recognized as a pioneering work of lesbian romance.
