About “The Santaroga Barrier”

Santaroga is a small California town in an agricultural valley that appears normal but follows unofficial rules. No houses are available for rent or sale, veterans always return there after discharge, and no Santarogan ever leaves the valley. Additionally, no chain supermarket can open there. A psychologist named Gilbert Dasein, who has a college friend living in the town, investigates to uncover the reason behind these strange rules. His search leads him down unexpected paths before he finally crosses The Santaroga Barrier. The story is part of a 1968 novel by Frank Herbert.
