About “The Sea Fairies”

This is a tale of life beneath the sea, featuring mermaids, sea serpents, and other ocean creatures. A little girl named Trot and an old sailor named Cap'n Bill are invited by mermaids to visit their underwater home. The story was written by L. Frank Baum as an attempt to interest readers in something other than the Oz series. In the preface, Baum expressed hope that readers who followed Dorothy’s adventures in Oz would also find Trot’s experiences intriguing. Although the book did not fully distract fans from Oz, it was well received and led to the inclusion of Trot and Cap'n Bill in later Oz stories. The novel was published in 1911.
