The Shepherd of Hermas, sometimes called simply The Shepherd, is a Christian literary work from the late first half of the second century, considered valuable by many Christians though not canonical scripture to early Church Fathers such as Irenaeus. It was popular among Christians in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th centuries, and is found in the Codex Sinaiticus. The Muratorian fragment identifies its author as Hermas, brother of Pope Pius I, and states it is useful for private reading but not for public reading in church because it is not apostolic.
