About “The Soul of Man Under Socialism”

"The Soul of Man Under Socialism" is an 1891 essay by Oscar Wilde that presents a libertarian socialist perspective and critiques capitalism. After reading Peter Kropotkin's works, Wilde adopted anarchist views and wrote the essay to argue against the negative effects of capitalism. He claimed that under capitalism, people waste their potential by focusing on solving problems caused by the system rather than addressing the root causes. Wilde believed that altruism in this context leads to ineffective solutions that only keep the problems alive. He advocated for a society where poverty is made impossible through structural change.
