About “The Spectre-Barber”
"The Spectre-Barber" is a short story written by Johann Karl August Musäus. It is part of his collection of satirical folk stories titled Volksmärchen der Deutschen, published in 1786. The story was translated into French by Jean-Baptiste Benoît Eyriès as part of his Fantasmagoriana collection in 1812. This French version influenced later works, including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and John William Polidori's The Vampyre. A partial English translation appeared in Tales of the Dead in 1813, and more complete translations from the original German were later published by Thomas Roscoe in 1826 and Thomas Carlyle in 1827.
