About “The Speed of Dark”
In the near future, disease is nearly eliminated through genetic treatments, but a generation is left behind with autism. These individuals are taught to function in society but are never considered "normal." Lou Arrendale is part of this group. He has a job, a car, and friends, and he makes an effort to fit in by learning social skills. He lives a quiet life until an experimental treatment offers to reverse autism in adults. This raises deep questions for Lou: Would he still be himself without autism? Would he still love classical music and see the world in unique ways? Would he still love Marjory, a woman who may not return his feelings? He faces pressure from his employer and inner conflict as he considers whether to change who he is. The Speed of Dark is a thoughtful and emotional novel exploring identity, humanity, and love.
