Leslie Maughan, a woman recognized for her keen mind, becomes involved in a case concerning Peter Dawlish, a convicted forger whom she believes to be innocent. After Peter’s release from prison, Leslie investigates a connection between him, a lady of high society, and a princess, following the violent death of a butler who possessed a valuable emerald, and uncovers that Peter may have a child and that his landlady has been using her home for more than room and board.
