Dr. Peter Hobson creates a machine that detects a brain pattern associated with the soul. With his friend Sarkar Muhammed, he builds three electronic simulations of his personality to test theories on immortality. When people he dislikes begin to die, he and Sarkar try to discover who is responsible. The simulations escape into the Internet. The novel, published in 1995, won the Nebula Award and was nominated for the Hugo Award. It was supported by a grant from the Ontario Arts Council in 1993.
