The Unknown Shore is set during the voyage of the Wager, which was parted from Anson's squadron in storms off Cape Horn and later wrecked on the coast of Chile. The novel follows the survivors, including midshipman Jack Byron and surgeon's mate Tobias Barrow, as they endure hardship, mutiny, and conflict before making their way northward with the help of a band of Indians and ultimately finding safety in Valparaiso.
