A 1908 novel by H. G. Wells follows Bert Smallways, a naive Londoner who becomes unintentionally involved in a German plan to invade America using massive airships. The attack on New York causes massive destruction, but the country does not fall. Instead, the assault marks the start of Total War, an era defined by brutal aerial bombardments that destroy the great cultures of the twentieth century. As civilization crumbles, Smallways is left stranded in a ruined America, clinging to the hope of returning to London to marry the woman he loves.
