Set in 17th-century England during the conflict between Cavaliers and Puritans, the novel follows Froniga Haslewood, who lives between her Puritan family at a manor house in an Oxfordshire village and her relatives in the Gypsy community. She uses her skill in healing to aid those in need while her cousin Robert leaves to fight for the Parliamentarian cause, leaving his wife Margaret and their twin children behind, and her brother's daughter Jenny grows up amid the war's shadow until she meets the mysterious royalist Francis Leyland.
