About “The Willows”

The Danube flows through a lonely and desolate region where the water spreads out and the land becomes a swamp covered with low willow-bushes. This area, marked as "Sumpfe" on maps, is filled with willows that sway in the wind, creating a moving plain of silver and green. In the short story Los sauces, two hikers travel down the river and decide to camp on an artificial island. As night falls, they feel a terrible, inhuman presence that threatens their sanity. The story builds an eerie atmosphere, showing how the natural environment becomes unsettling and alien. Blackwood explores the idea of nature as a powerful, incomprehensible force. The story is short, around seventy pages, and uses a limited narrative to create tension. The edition by Hermida includes a good translation and additional texts by H. P. Lovecraft, which are largely untranslated in Spanish. Los sauces is considered one of Blackwood's finest works.
