About “The World According to Garp”
The World According to Garp is a 1978 novel by John Irving, his fourth book. The story centers on T. S. Garp, who was conceived when his mother, Jenny Fields, a nurse, raped a brain-damaged soldier in her care. Garp grows up to become a novelist. The book became a bestseller and was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction in 1979. Its first paperback edition won the same award the next year.
