The book centers on a client, John Carver Billings II, who hires the Cool & Lam detective agency to locate two women, Sylvia and Millie, whom he claims were with him during a critical time period and can serve as an alibi. Billings' account of his encounters with the women contains inconsistencies, and his story becomes increasingly unreliable as Donald Lam uncovers contradictions in his narrative.
