Haviland Tuf is an honest space-trader who loves cats. He ends up owning the last seedship of Earth's Ecological Engineering Corps, a powerful tool that gives him control over cellular material for thousands of creatures. This unique equipment allows him to address problems caused by human colonization, such as hostile monsters, overpopulation, and a dictator who uses plagues to achieve his goals. Tuf's integrity and resourcefulness make him the only hope for colonists facing disaster. The novel, a 1986 science fiction fix-up by George R. R.
