George R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle co-authored a fix-up novel set on the planet Windhaven, a world of small islands with harsh weather and monster-infested seas. Humans settled Windhaven after a colony starship crash. They discovered that the planet's light gravity and dense atmosphere allowed them to fly using metal wings made from the ship's parts. Over time, the silver-winged flyers became a prestigious group, delivering news and stories across the islands. They were also an elite caste, with wings passed down through families. Maris of Amberly, a fisherman's daughter raised by a flyer, longs to fly but is expected to give her chance to her stepbrother, Coll. Coll wants to be a singer instead. Maris challenges tradition, fighting to let anyone with the skill fly, not just those born into the flyer class. After winning her battle, she faces resistance from those who reject the new order. As she tries to teach others to fly, she also struggles to protect the culture she wanted to join.
