On the Day of the Dead, with the fiesta in full swing in the shadow of Popocatepetl, Geoffrey Firmin, HM ex-consul, drowns himself in liquor and mescal while his ex-wife and half brother look on, powerless to help. As the day wears on, it becomes clear that Geoffrey must die as his only escape from a world he cannot understand.
